LR V8i Rebuild
Aug 21st, 2007 by C. Alexander Leigh
I think I am going to aim for a December rebuild of my LR engine. Long hours in a freezing cold shop working on the finest example of what the British can do to an American engine can be my Christmas present to myself.
For those not in the know, at 145,000 this engine is basically due. It’s not well known that the design spec for the V8 petrol is actually about 200,000km. I don’t have an excellent cite for this, but I remember seeing it on a specifications article about the V8i and TDI comparing their reliability.
The thing about rebuilds is by the time you really need a rebuild, you really need an expensive rebuild. If you get in there early, only the cheap parts are worn out, not the expensive ones, and the exercise is mostly one of labor. You can save yourself a lot of aggrivation and headache by just rebuilding it when it starts to get sloppy, rather than squeezing another 50k out of it before you have a real (expensive) failure.
