Mountain Hardwear Bags
Sep 30th, 2008 by C. Alexander Leigh
I wrote Mountain Hardwear and asked whether their sleeping bags were rated for subjective comfort or survival and suggested my winter-weather use at 53 degrees north.
Anyone who’s slept in Marmot bags will probably agree they tend to run pretty cold, and since we need to pick up some bags for James Bay, this is top of mind. My Marmot bag kept me alive on many crazy nights in a lot of crazy weather, but I’ve got a mind to go with MH this time around. A model of good customer service, they got back to me within a couple of hours:
Hello Alex,
Thanks for your interest in Mountain Hardwear and your inquiry regarding sleeping bag temperature ratings.
Mountain Hardwear sleeping bag temperature ratings are simply a guide for helping choosing the appropriate sleeping bag for their intended uses. If a bag is rated twenty degrees for example the user should be comfortable sleeping in the bag at that rating. The rating is not a guarantee. There are many variables beyond the sleeping bag alone that can affect how you sleep or how comfortable you are in the bag.
I would recommend the Ghost SL -40 down sleeping bag for your intended use.
Thanks for your interest in Mountain Hardwear.
Best Regards,
Joe Web
