Killington
Dec 27th, 2008 by C. Alexander Leigh

We headed up to Killington to ride last weekend. This is the first time I had been there (and the first time we’d been riding anywhere in New England (or the east coast (or as a married couple))). So it was a number of firsts. We chose to go up the weekend of the big blizzard, despite the vast media empire of common sense telling us to stay off the roads.
Everybody says the snow out here is lowsy, but there was no evidence of that at all (especially because it was all fresh). It was about -5oC out which was pleasantly balmy when riding, although I would guess the winds were about 40kph at the peak, so what’s that, -14oC. Conditions were packed powder and it was definitely the best riding I’ve seen in awhile, considering I haven’t seen much.
I ride a 164 Custom X, and I can easily see how this is going to be too long, especially on the icy steeps that this snow probably turns into after a week of wind. It’s a good time to by boards on eBay, though, so maybe I’ll pickup a shorter board to ride and trash up on the ice and rocks.
For not having any acronyms, the TJ does pretty well in the snow, even with the quasi-street tires it has. There was this moment we were cruising along the interstate slightly sideways that I was really regretting not having already bought a winch for it, but I got it straight and now I can leave it until its too late.
