Narrowing In On The “Golden Tunnel”
Sep 28th, 2009 by C. Alexander Leigh
Little bit of an update. We’ve realized that GC seems to have good (sort of) coordinate information but the basemaps don’t exactly line up, either because of a projection or some other problem. This can lead to a misunderstanding as to the actual lat/longs for the coordinates (if you try to match the waypoint off the map). If you click the identify icon you can get the lat/long that is actually in the database.
For the “golden tunnel” mine they are showing, for example, 47.772058 -121.441442
This is NOT the mine people are talking about as the golden tunnel, though. That one is listed as the hole-in-the-wall claim which is given as more of a general area (albeit not a particularly large one). A starting place for that is 47.724465, -121.55195
On a tangent it is listing the yellow jacket as 47.742876 -121.511137. My understanding is still that nobody has found this one yet, despite trying.
I’d like to get out to this area which involves hiking up to crater lake and then going over the mountain and descending. The current word is that the road washed out “badly” but I haven’t been there to see what the actual conditions are or whether or not they might be passable. If it’s truly impassable I am hearing this would add as much as 8 miles round-trip to the hike.
