We also headed up today to the Index wall. I was hoping to find some Toproping locations to teach Victoria rope technique but this is a pretty advanced area that due to the topography doesn’t seem to any good toproping. Victoria and I headed out in the Jeep to checkout NF-6420. This is the access to “crater lake” near Red Mtn, which is apparently the route to get to the Hole-In-The-Wall aka Golden Tunnel mine. I had heard from some folks on the Internet that the road was washed out, and it certainly is.

Seriously, this Washington silt is really something. On the other hand, how many vehicles can you take a powerwasher to the inside of (twice anyways)… After it dried it seemed just as dirty as before, although this time it doesn’t smell of ATF fluid, which is a good thing.

Looking at the FSM I realized the pulley and belt routing for the 4.0 6cyl Jeep engine is the same whether or not you have A/C, the belt is just a little shorter. With the belt off, all the accessories seemed to spin fine except the A/C compressor, which sounds like it has a bag [...]

Some will recall on the last Naches trip I swamped the Jeep and the transmission filled with water and silt. We got the Jeep out by filling it with some engine oil (all we had) after draining the water/mud/ATF and then got it home to Redmond on ATF Type-F (the wrong kind).
