NF-6420 Recon
Oct 10th, 2009 by C. Alexander Leigh

Victoria and I headed out in the Jeep to checkout NF-6420. This is the access to “crater lake” near Red Mtn, which is apparently the route to get to the Hole-In-The-Wall aka Golden Tunnel mine. I had heard from some folks on the Internet that the road was washed out, and it certainly is.
About ~ 3.4 miles from the fork in the road (right near the end, if you are looking at a map) is the first washout. At low water with no snowmelt we could bump Betty over it, but, there turns out to be four or five more washouts along the road of varying degrees. We hiked from there to the end, and getting a truck over it just isn’t worth it versus backpacking, making access to the mine at least a 2-day affair until the road is repaired. The good news is it’s a really beautiful area and spending a weekend up there would not be awful.
my husband and i want to visit the Golden Tunnel mine, we live between GoldBar and Index and have been researching this for a couple of years. We would appreciate any information that you could share.
