NF-56
Dec 21st, 2009 by C. Alexander Leigh

Drove up NF-56 with the intention of making a campfire to cook some lunch. I’ve started them in damp conditions before but not outright rain which is what we encountered, and I hadn’t brought any dry wood with me, so we scrubbed that idea and just ate some velvet cake in the woods instead.
On the drive up I realized I had forgotten to look up any geo-caches, even though I had brought a GPS. Trying to think up something to do I came up with this concept that we should try to find 10 distinct species of animals. I thought that would be pretty easy, actually (insects count, right?) but we actually couldn’t find any animals at all. Heard some birds, but sight unseen. Even the insects were out of the rain.
Heading up the road it just turns to snow but there isn’t any real accumulation before you get to the 56 gate (which these are not pictures of, although its similar in construction). I really miss being able to go all the way up 56, and particularly I miss the access to the river that was afforded, there were some great fishing spots that I know other people are missing as well.
Still though a bad rainy day in the mountains beats a good day in the city any time.
