First Twisty Ride of the Year
Mar 13th, 2010 by Steve Block
I’ve been out and about on my SV650 quite a bit this winter, but I’ve been sticking around Denver proper and some of the fun roads in the south and west parts of town. They put a lot of sand on roads in the winter and it can take a while before the good roads feel safe to me. It’s mid March now, and I thought it would be worth finding out what the roads were like.
I decided to try a nice route I’ve ridden with my friend Adam, a Hayabusa owner, in the past. The plan was to head up Deer Creek Canyon, then string that ride up through Evergreen to Bear Creek Canyon and then back into south Denver. I built the route I wanted to ride in Garmin Roadtrip and sent that to the Streetpilot 2720 I often mount on my handlebars. I have a tendency to miss turns otherwise, and on this route one of the missed turns means missing half the fun roads. The GPS helps keep me on the route and lets me record my ride so I can archive it in Google Earth and Roadtrip.
I left around 11 AM, and did 20 boring miles on C470, then got off at Kipling and headed to the fun roads. This was about 40 solid miles of twisty roads , and although there was some sand on the tightest turns the roads were mostly in great condition through the whole thing. I came out around Lakewood and took Hampden back towards home. Total distance was around 85 miles, about half of that on the highway and in the city, and about half on good roads.
Although I had my camera with me I didn’t ever stop to take any pictures, and I hadn’t set up the handlebar mount. So, sadly, no pictures. I do have a nice route map to share though.

Those squiggles sure look promising from the overhead… next-time pictures!
