Hi-Lift Rebuild

So much to do before the trip this weekend, and one of the chores that I had been sitting on was rebuilding the widowmaker. The hilift was originally AB’s and I always thought that it had a bent shear pin from all those Unimogs, or that time that AB says he lifted a 1216 up [...]

Superwinch Sorted

The problem was with the remote pins not making good contact, sorted enough by spacing the spins a little and probably (moreso) adding some di-electric grease. Probably a good idea anyways because the way the socket is on the winch, it can trap a little water. Now it becomes a game to see if Superwinch [...]

Jeep Propshaft

Started putting the Jeep propshaft together after scoring a cool grease adapter set at Harbor Freight, but I realized that I’m dumb to try to do this before getting a vise because that just makes it 100x easier. I am not sure how people do this on the trail, I guess they just want it [...]

TJ Steering Fluid

Prior to some year, which is widely accepted to be 2004 although I have also heard 2002 so it may have varied by country/market, the power steering systems on TJs were filled with a MS5931 power steering fluid. This fluid is widely sold through the dealer network for a pretty penny, although non-MOPAR aftermarket fluids [...]

Multi-Switch Replaced

Very easy job on the Jeep, only 4 screws involved to remove the shroud and switch, and another 2 to separate the headlight switch assembly from the wiper switch assembly. It’s a very nice design, very clean and clever, I like it a lot. The new multi-switch works perfectly, and fixed the headlight problems as [...]

Bits & Pieces

Ordered a new steering box and a MFS switch. Maybe this way the Jeep can avoid turning into the Land Rover. I am not sure how I feel about my local Schuck’s turning into an O’Reilly’s.

I was thrilled to discover that there’s a new Harbor Freight on 20th in Bellevue, right near where I used to live and only a few minutes from where I live now. Much better then having to drive down to Kent to buy cheap & dangerous tools. I was just as happy to discover that [...]

A/C Compressor Clutch

Looking at the FSM I realized the pulley and belt routing for the 4.0 6cyl Jeep engine is the same whether or not you have A/C, the belt is just a little shorter. With the belt off, all the accessories seemed to spin fine except the A/C compressor, which sounds like it has a bag [...]

Some will recall on the last Naches trip I swamped the Jeep and the transmission filled with water and silt. We got the Jeep out by filling it with some engine oil (all we had) after draining the water/mud/ATF and then got it home to Redmond on ATF Type-F (the wrong kind). I was a [...]

Body Damage “repaired”

Repaired the body damage more or less to Betty. Rather tha hi-lifting the fender back into shape, I used a floor jack and a pelican case and jumped up and down on the bumper a couple of times. It’s mostly pretty straight, I doubt you’d notice unless you were looking for it. The plastic fender [...]
