CB750 Engine Notes

Disassembling the CB750 SOHC engine is fairly straight forward; it can loosely be described as “remove all the bolts you can find”. Still, here are some notes. Besides the obvious head nuts, there are some philips screw/head head combos located in the air voids inside the head. All four can be accessed through the rubber [...]

CB750 Case Cracked

Cracked the case. Everything in the engine looks clean and a-ok. Ultimately the problem with the engine turned out to be the #3 piston and cylinder. If you look closely at the pictures you’ll see the rings were frozen and the cylinder has a bit of corrosion on the inside. I think water got in [...]

CB750 Engine

Pulled the head off, then the cylinder head. Basically all that is left is to crack the case and get the crank and transmission bits out. The pistons look scary, or not, I can’t really tell. For all the crud the walls seem pretty smooth and I didn’t notice any visible scoring. I guess we’ll [...]

CB750 Engine

Got the stubborn bolt off. I whacked the valves to unstick them, put a ratchet on the alternator bolt, and gave it a couple of sharp whacks, and the engine unstuck. This let me rotate the bolt to where I could get to it. Pulled the rockers and cams off uneventfully. 4 of the head [...]

CB750 Engine

Got the valve cover off to realize that the engine seized in the most inconvenient place, with one of the crankshaft sprocket bolts directly down where it is difficult to fit a wrench. I’ll have to get a slim little wrench, or grind one down aaron-style, or figure something out. A SK 15 degree offset [...]

CB750 Engine Out

It’s all true. With some handy help from Victoria, the CB750 engine is out. It did manage to piss a bit of oil everywhere, but, what can you do. It came out fairly easily; thanks to R for the trick to tip the bike over and just lift the frame off. Now the real work [...]

CB750

Pulled the rear tire, oil tank, carb rack, and prepped the engine for removal (got all the bolts out, tach cable, brackets, etc). The clutch wire needs to be dealt with and then it’s ready to tip over and pop the engine out. The intakes of #2, #3 especially and also #4 are crusted up [...]

CB750

Pulled more bits off the bike today while red got started assembling the parts washer. Pulled most of the stuff off the frame, all that’s really left is the engine, swing-arm, oil tank, and the fork and tires now. I hope to get the tires off tomorrow and then pull the engine out but I [...]

CB750

Picked up a not-anywhere-close-to-running CB750 for cheap out in Tacoma. Getting it home with Aaron’s trailer was a bit of an adventure that I don’t even want to go into, but suffice it to say, the bike was transported to the shop and nobody died. The bike is very complete and original and the frame [...]
