I happened to pass Beckler River Rd on the way up to Steven’s this weekend, and it looks like (at least from the highway) all the snow that kept me out in January is gone. The area is still around the snow line, though.

Gerlach Winter

Ever wonder what the black rock desert area looks like in winter? I had high hopes that you could drive out there towing a snowboarder at reckless speeds, but their trip report from 2004 suggests the playa is impassable. That surprises me a little, I’d expect it to be frozen solid.

Maine Bear Monitoring

I can’t decide if these people are totally insane or totally cool. I suppose it’s a mix of both. Basically what they do is hunt down bears in the dead of winter using radio collars, and then… dig them up! Notice the cute little cubs with their killing claws. Adorable.
